Malaria is endemic in the low-altitude areas of the Northern Province, Mpumalanga and north-eastern Kwazulu Natal.
The highest-risk area is a strip of about 100 km along the Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland border. Visitor to risk-area and to Kruger National Park or other no malaria-free game parks are strongly recommended to take malaria tablets and mosquito repellents; in a malaria region wear long trousers and sleeves at night. The Bilharzia parasite may be present in streams, dams and lakes in some of the northern and eastern parts of South Africa; travellers should avoid contact with water. South African sun presents a high ultraviolet ray rating, and sun proctection factors of 50 and over are recommended. In South Africa, medical treatments and hospital fees must be paid direct. Travel medical insurance is therefore recommended. |
