The subtropical belt of high pressure gives South Africa warm temperate conditions,  with dry and  abundance of sunshine.

Very relevant are the effects of the warm Agulhas and cold Benguela oceanic currents, along the East and West coasts respectively. South Africa has an average annual rainfall of 464 mm, compared with a world average of 860mm. In Cape Town, the average rainfall is highest in winter months ( June, July, August), while in Johannesburg and Durban it is highest during summer. Anyway, South Africa’s rainfall is unpredictable.

In South Africa, temperatures tend to be lower than in other regions at similar latitude, for example Australia, due to the greater elevation above sea level of the subcontinent; average annual temperatures are remarkably uniform throughout the country, with striking contrast between temperatures on the east and west coasts (  the eastern regions are warmer) and with  an hardly increase in warm from South to North.

Sunshine is plentiful, ranging from 7.5 to 9.5 hours daily, compared to 3.8 hours average in London  and 6.9 in New York.

Western Cape : mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers, and cool, wet winters. Average maximum summer temperature is 26°C; winter 18°C.

Eastern Cape and Garden Route: mediterranean climate and elements of the eastern regions summer rainfalls combined. Average maximum summer temperature is 25°C; winter 20°C.

Kwazulu-Natal: typically subtropical summer rainfall, and dry, cool winters. Snowfall on Drakensberg in winter. Average maximum summer temperature is 27°C; winter 23°C.

Gauteng and Mpumalanga: summer rainfall. Dry, cool winters, with occasional frost early morning on Highveld. Johannesburg: average maximum summer temperature is 26°C; winter 18°C. Mid summer in Kruger National Park can exeed 36°C.
